Empowerment - The word that has lost its meaning

Empowerment the word that is misunderstood in a big way. Today when we talk about empowerment, it is more about giving reservations. Well I was of the opinion that empowering someone is about making them capable so that they can compete with others. Are we really empowering people by giving reservations?

Just imagine a 100 meter race. There is a person who doesn't have fitness levels or training available to compete against the best. Now what our logic of empowering that person is let him start at 90 meter mark (I hope I am not being too optimistic here ;)). He will beat Usain bolt who starts at zero mark (10 meter against 100 meter, he should do that ;)). Wow we have just empowered a person to beat the best in the world. Really? Isn't it unfair to the person starting at zero? Maybe not to that extent as it is for the one who starts at 90. Because every now & then he will be reminded of the fact that "You won because you started at 90 meters". Now why don't we think of giving him opportunities to have improved fitness levels & training & then compete? He wins or loses, doesn't matter, at least he will be proud of himself. The feeling of guilt will not be there.

We are actually lowering the levels. The person who was supposed to be competing with rest of the world is now competing with a tiny set of people who deserved the same as he does. People get to positions & don't know what to do because they didn't earn the place, they just got dragged to it with a push from our empowerment policies.

I don't know the reasons but the only solution I can see is education. When I say Education, it means good education, because like empowerment education can also get misunderstood. I am a firm believer in the saying "it's never late". So let us start from today, educate people, make them capable so that they don't have to rely on reservations.

  2. Lucid, Crisp and Meaningful. You managed to beautifully bring out the message by avoiding complexity, which i guess is the closest associate of this term called empowerment. Enjoyed reading it. Keep writing buddy. Its wonderful to create a Mind Share :)
